ALIWAL SHOAL 15 - 18 June 2017

A quick getaway for the whole family!

We have planned something different for this trip including a bit of sightseeing and adventure! This is really the perfect family getaway something to do for everyone! Who knows… we might even get to build a snow man!!

Thursday 15 June – We leave whenever work or commitments allow us and meet us half way to Durbs, to Book into Qwantani the luxury 4star Resort, on the Sterkfontein dam. Check in is at 2pm so if you can leave earlier even better! The resort has a lot to offer for both adults and kids so a nice stop over filled with fire places and fun.

Friday 16 June – Leave at 8am for an hour drive to Little Switzerland for our morning coffee. Then we set off to enjoy a slow, relaxed drive down the Oliviershoek Pass. Its spectacular views gives us the opportunity to enjoy this road trip to the infamous Nottingham road where you can explore all the crafts shops and the best GIN on tap! After a scrumptious lunch we leave for Scottburgh to arrive at about 3pm checking into the luxurious Blue Marlin hotel or Camp Site. The camp site is a hop; skip and a jump from the launch site and the hotel… well just walk down stairs.

Saturday 17 June – Divers will have an early start exploring Aliwal’s reefs and wrecks, non-divers get to sleep late and explore the little town of Scottburgh. Saturday evening we have many options of local pubs and restaurants to have supper and maybe a party

We’ll be running a couple of courses during this trip:

PADI Shark Specialty

There is also the Baited Shark Diving where divers can observe Tiger Sharks and other Sharks in their natural environment while the Sharks are lured to a closed steel container containing sardines and chum!!!

PADI Wreck Specialty

There are two wrecks near the reef that are prime sites for divers. The Nebo which sank in 1884 and the Norwegian bulk carrier called the "Produce" which sank in 1974. Other than that, The Aliwal Shoal is a rocky reef which is the remains of an ancient fossilized sand dune which is approximately 5 km off the coast. The reef plays host to many kinds of hard and soft corals and an estimated 1200 species of tropical and subtropical fish.
